Status of my blog

So, to be honest, I mainly made this blog for the initial post. However, I just checked and apparently I have 2000 views. Although its not that much (considering its been up for a year), I would like to see this blog grow.

So for now, if anyone has any suggestions or questions or something, I'll gladly listen. I read every comment that you guys post.

  1. I'm curious, how many months did it take you to learn the first thousand or so Kanji?

  2. I started learning around 07/20/2010 and recorded some milestones with Anki.
    07/20/2010 - 0 (started learning hiragana)
    10/17/2010 - 245 (All JLPT3)
    03/02/2011 - 984 (All JLPT2)
    12/14/2011 - 1706 (Most JLPT1)

Since then I stopped forcing myself to learn new kanji every day, but switched to a "If I see the kanji once and it is either 1)Somewhat common use or 2)In the Jouyou kanji list, then I will make myself learn it." type of system.

I'm in no rush to force myself to learn the rest of the jouyou kanji simply because there are a few hundred of them that I have never seen at all in practice.

    1. I wrote a big reply and decided to just make it a new post. Check it out.

  4. When learning a kanji, how important is it to memorize the on-yomi? Wouldn't you just learn it by use when expanding your vocabulary?

    1. Up to you really. The benefit if knowing the on-yomi is that if you see the kanji used in a word that you have never used before you can immediately know how to pronounce it.

I recommend learning as part of compounds, so don't look at kanji individually and make yourself learn that way, but learn compounds and then remember which kanji make up which compounds.

    2. I have another question, if you don't mind. How did you go through Genki?

In more words, what did you do for each section/lesson? Did you make anki cards for the vocab, do all the activities, etc?

I read your brief summary on what you do in your first post, but I was hoping for something a bit more explicit.

  5. I didn't start actively learning kanji until I was done with genki I and II. Also, I didn't do any of the exercises. All that matters is you know the grammar rules. You can learn vocab and kanji from other places.

    1. I see. Have you looked into Tae-Kim's grammar guide?

I'm assuming you've seen it posted in the threads. Any opinion on it compared to Genki's grammar lessons?

  6. I found Kana invaders to be very effective to help me with learning the hiragana and katakana.

Previously I had written most of them down though with the right stroke order which I found on the wiktionary.

I hope that this may help other anons learn the kanas. :3
